Desert Rose Bonsai (Adenium Obesum)

Desert Rose Bonsai, also known as Adenium Obesum, is a unique and exotic flowering bonsai that is perfect for those who love the look of bonsai trees but want something a little different. This bonsai features a thick, bulbous trunk that tapers upward, giving it a striking and artistic appearance. The leaves of the desert rose bonsai are bright green. And they are accented by large, showy flowers in shades of pink, red, and white.

Adenium Obesum

The Adenium Obesum is relatively easy to care for, making it a great choice for both novice and experienced bonsai enthusiasts. It prefers bright, indirect sunlight and should be watered sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings. During the growing season, the bonsai can be fertilized once a month with a general-purpose liquid fertilizer.

Pruning and shaping are important aspects of caring for the Desert Rose plant. Regular pruning can help maintain the desired shape and size of the bonsai, while wiring can be used to shape the trunk and branches. With proper care and attention, the desert rose bonsai can live for many years and provide a unique and eye-catching addition to any indoor or outdoor space.

Item Description:

  • Adenium plants thrive in full sun and hot conditions. Please note that if you live in a cloudy, cool area, the plant may struggle to grow leaves and thrive.
  • Desert Rose Color may vary between pink and red, and may not be the same as pictured.
  • All plants are shipped barerooted and without leaves.

Care

Desert rose Bonsai Care

The Desert Rose Bonsai, also known as Japanese Frangipani and Adenium Bonsai, is a compact succulent tree that originates from Africa and Arabia. It has fleshy leaves and a distinctive bulbous base, and it produces stunning large flowers in pink and white or red hues when exposed to sufficient sunlight.

Placement

The Desert Rose can thrive outdoors year-round in warm climates. However, in temperate climates, it should be positioned outside in a sunny spot or semi-shade between May and September, and kept indoors in a warm place with plenty of light from autumn to spring. The minimum temperature should not drop below 5°C/40°F. Typically, the Desert Rose will shed its leaves during the winter months.

Watering

As a succulent plant, the Desert Rose requires minimal watering. It is recommended to water the plant once every 7 to 10 days, allowing the soil to slightly dry out between each watering session.

Fertilizing

When it comes to fertilizing, apply liquid fertilizer at half the recommended strength once a month from spring to autumn. During winter, the tree doesn’t require fertilization unless it’s still producing new shoots. If it’s kept outside, you can opt for a solid and organic fertilizer instead of liquid fertilizer.

Pruning and wiring

Adenium Bonsai can be pruned year-round, but it’s important to time it well since flowers grow on new shoots. Pruning encourages more branching and, consequently, more flower buds to emerge. Cut back long shoots and remove damaged parts by making clean cuts just above a leaf node or junction. To avoid exposure to the toxic milk sap, it’s recommended to wear gloves when working with the plant. When wiring branches, be careful not to apply the wire too tightly, as it can leave marks and scars on the plant. The Adenium is susceptible to scarring from tightly applied wire.

Repotting

To ensure the well-being of your Desert Rose Bonsai, it’s recommended to repot it every two or three years in late spring, with root pruning. A well-draining soil mix is crucial as excess moisture can be fatal for the plant. Before repotting, make sure to let the soil dry out a bit, and avoid watering for a few days after repotting. Remember, like all succulents, the Desert Rose Bonsai needs a well-draining soil mix to thrive.

Pests and diseases

Desert Roses may be susceptible to aphids, mealybugs, and spider mites if they are under stress from poor conditions. Practicing good care can help prevent most infestations, but if your tree does get affected, feel free to share some photos on our forum so we can assist you in finding the appropriate product to treat the issue.

Delivery is slow, but the plant is very beautiful.

  3. Leo M. (Verified Buyer)

Just received my plant, and I’m quite thrilled! It arrived well-packaged, though slightly dried out. I anticipated receiving a root to nurture, but to my surprise, it’s already a fully-formed tree! I used a combination of various soils, added some slow-release fertilizer, and planted it in its pot. The outlook is very promising. I’m going to place it alongside my other plants and hope for its successful growth!

The item arrived in excellent condition. Although it hasn’t shown any significant changes yet, it remains firm and appears healthy. The attached pictures capture its condition upon arrival and after one month. There’s a possibility it might be starting to bud, but it’s a bit challenging to confirm. While I wish it were growing as rapidly as others’, I’m content knowing it’s not struggling like some. This marks my first experience with bare roots, and it’s been intriguing. Would I purchase this again from them? Absolutely.

  5. Leo A (Verified Buyer)

Provide the necessary care, be patient with its growth, and you’ll witness the results! I purchased this approximately a year and a half ago, and as evident, it’s thriving into a robust plant. Until about a month ago, it had only about eight leaves, but then I placed it outdoors. These plants thrive in the warmth and summer sun! Since being outside, it has almost doubled in size. I highly recommend getting one if you’re a plant enthusiast!

  6. Mia HM (Verified Buyer)

I appreciate and enjoy taking care of this plant. There were moments when I doubted whether I was investing my time wisely or if I would ever see leaves, let alone flowers. However, I’m thrilled about its current state and the potential for flowers. I’ll continue to be patient.

I don’t give it too much attention; it’s placed in indirect natural light, and I believe it’s in a cactus mix. Occasionally, my air plant also shares the space with it.

  7. Sophia M. (Verified Buyer)

I acquired a desert rose root stalk, and I confess I initially hesitated upon its arrival. My expectations leaned towards receiving a fully grown plant resembling the site’s displayed image. However, I was pleasantly surprised as I witnessed it sprout and develop daily, transforming from a bare stalk to branches adorned with green leaves over the past month. Following the provided instructions and consulting a helpful YouTube video on desert rose care, I planted it in recommended cactus soil from PrimeBonsai. For its watering routine every one and a half to two weeks, I administer a diluted 1/4 part Miracle Gro and water mix, ensuring only a small amount reaches the top soil. The pot features a drain plate at the bottom. I’m genuinely delighted and astonished by its rapid growth! While it hasn’t bloomed yet as of the updated picture on 6/26/2023, it boasts several flourishing green leaves. Eagerly anticipating its forthcoming beautiful blooms!

Witnessing leaves sprout from the tuber is enchanting, but after 5 months, the plant boasts numerous glossy leaves without a single flower. While I still appreciate the plant in my garden, the absence of flowers leaves me disappointed.

The shop delivered the wrong item, and after I contacted the customer service department, I was instructed on how to return the product and receive a refund. Although I did get my money back, I am still disappointed because I couldn’t purchase the bonsai tree I had originally wanted. I hope the shop pays more attention in the future.

  10. Isabella Rodríguez (Verified Buyer)

Está en buen estado y llegó de manera saludable.

  11. Maya Rodriguez (Verified Buyer)

I placed it behind the curtain in a sunlit window because it appeared unhealthy, and then I pretty much forgot about it, only remembering to water it about once every 4-5 weeks. Surprisingly, it bloomed! Neglect with good intentions for the win!

The bare-root plants arrived exactly as described but took longer than expected. They were slightly smaller than the description, yet the seller compensated by sending two plants instead of one, which made me happy. I believe they will thrive.

Regarding some negative reviews: If you expected plants with leaves and flowers, you might not have done your research. Just flip through the pictures or read the description; it’s clear that they come as bare-root plants.

Now, six months later, they have leafed out. As it’s currently cold, I expect them to flourish come spring. Unfortunately, one of them died, becoming soft and mushy. On a positive note, my seedlings from another vendor are doing well. I’m curious if they’ll bloom in their first year.

I’m so happy with my plant , three weeks after arrived and Is to live 🥰🥰🥰 i love 10 start for this product.

  14. Olivia (Verified Buyer)

Arrived exactly as described. I was concerned it might have been exposed to freezing temperatures during shipping, especially since there was snow on the ground when the mail lady placed it in my mailbox. It stayed there all day until I realized it was supposed to be on the front porch. There were no instructions on what to do, so I ran warm water over it for a minute or two to bring it to room temperature before planting it in a mix of bonsai soil and pumice rock. I water it about once a week and have placed it under a grow light during daylight hours, keeping it in the dark when it’s nighttime. Surprisingly, I’m already noticing new growth. I was initially skeptical and thought it might be a waste, but it’s progressing well so far.

It’s a charming little plant and appears to be in good health. I had to remove some yellowed leaves, but that was anticipated due to shipping. I’m eager to observe its growth and discover the color of its blooms in the future. Overall, I’m satisfied with my purchase.
