Care

How to care Podocarpus macrophyllus

Podocarpus macrophyllus, also known as the Japanese yew or Buddhist pine, is a popular evergreen shrub or tree that is native to Asia. With its dark green foliage and graceful habit, it’s no wonder that this plant is a favorite among gardeners and landscapers. Here are some tips for caring for Podocarpus macrophyllus:

Light

Podocarpus macrophyllus prefers bright, indirect sunlight, but can also tolerate some shade. If the plant is exposed to too much direct sunlight, the leaves may become scorched. On the other hand, if the plant doesn’t receive enough light, it may become leggy and spindly. Ideally, you should place your Podocarpus macrophyllus in a location that receives bright, filtered light for most of the day.

Watering

Proper watering is key to the health of your Podocarpus macrophyllus. During the growing season (spring and summer), water deeply once a week, allowing the soil to dry out slightly between waterings. Be sure to water the plant thoroughly, so that the water reaches the roots. In the winter, you can reduce watering to once every two weeks. Avoid overwatering, as this can lead to root rot. To check if your plant needs water, insert your finger into the soil to a depth of about an inch. If the soil feels dry at that depth, it’s time to water.

Soil

Podocarpus macrophyllus prefers well-draining soil that is rich in organic matter. A soil mix of one-third sand, one-third perlite, and one-third peat moss or compost is ideal. When repotting your plant, be sure to choose a pot with good drainage holes to allow excess water to escape.

Fertilizer

Fertilizing your Podocarpus macrophyllus can help promote healthy growth. During the growing season, you can fertilize the plant once a month with a balanced fertilizer, such as a 10-10-10 or 20-20-20 fertilizer. Alternatively, you can use a slow-release fertilizer at the beginning of the growing season. Be sure to follow the instructions on the fertilizer package carefully, as overfertilizing can damage your plant.

Pruning

Pruning your Podocarpus macrophyllus is not always necessary, but it can help to maintain the plant’s shape and promote new growth. The best time to prune the plant is in the early spring, just before new growth begins. You can use clean, sharp pruning shears to remove any dead, diseased, or damaged branches, as well as any branches that are crossing or rubbing against each other. You can also shape the plant by pruning back the tips of the branches. Avoid pruning more than one-third of the plant’s foliage at a time, as this can stress the plant.

Pests and diseases

Podocarpus macrophyllus is generally considered to be a low-maintenance plant that is relatively pest-resistant. However, like any plant, it can be susceptible to certain pests and diseases. Common pests that can affect Podocarpus macrophyllus include scale insects, spider mites, and mealybugs. If you notice any signs of infestation, such as yellowing or distorted leaves, sticky residue on the leaves, or the presence of small insects, you can treat the plant with an appropriate insecticide or miticide. Be sure to follow the instructions on the product carefully and avoid spraying the plant in direct sunlight, as this can damage the leaves.

In summary, Podocarpus macrophyllus is a beautiful and relatively easy-to-care-for plant that can.

For a reasonable price, I acquired a fantastic little bonsai tree. The one I received bears a striking resemblance to the image advertised, and the accompanying pot is equally impressive. The packaging was carefully done, and the tree arrived in pristine condition without any damage sustained during shipping. It looks stunning sitting on my desk…

  5. Alex M. (Verified Buyer)

This is my third time buying from Prime Bonsai, and I even gifted one of their products in the past. However, I must say that the Podocarpus I received this time is even more stunning than their display photo. I am thoroughly impressed by its beauty and cannot wait to gift it to someone special.

  6. Jennifer L (Verified Buyer)

The plant is absolutely beautiful and arrived in excellent condition. In my opinion, this is the best online bonsai supplier I have come across so far. The item was packaged meticulously and arrived in impeccable shape. I wholeheartedly recommend this supplier.

  7. Morgan W. (Verified Buyer)

The tree is stunning and larger than I anticipated! Although there were a few yellow leaves, it has started producing new shoots. The overall packaging was great and the delivery was prompt and on time.

  8. Gordonius (Verified Buyer)

As promised, the tree was delivered in just two days and it is stunningly beautiful and healthy, with a great size. I’m not sure why some reviewers had negative experiences, unless they ordered during the winter season. I’m thrilled to continue nurturing this bonsai and see it develop into an even more magnificent specimen with time. Additionally, the pot is a lovely shade of blue, measuring 8 inches in length, as you can see in the attached photos.

  9. Ali P (Verified Buyer)

The bonsai was packaged with great care and arrived promptly. It appeared to be healthy upon arrival and is still thriving after four weeks. I’m very pleased with my purchase and satisfied with the product’s quality.

  10. Alessandro R (Verified Buyer)

I’m thoroughly impressed with this bonsai tree. Firstly, its size took me by surprise, as it boasted a lot more growth than I anticipated. Secondly, the shape of the trunk was different from what I had seen in the nursery’s picture. It featured some fantastic curves, leading me to believe it had been expertly shaped with wiring. Finally, I ordered it during the Christmas season, in the midst of the pandemic, so it arrived later than expected. Despite this delay, it was safely packaged, and even though the box had a gaping rip on one side, the plant wasn’t damaged at all. The soil remained moist even after over a week of delivery. I would definitely consider buying more bonsai trees from this seller in the future. I usually don’t write reviews or take surveys, but this tree deserves all the praise it can get.

  11. doyle C (Verified Buyer)

The item was packaged nicely, and it is absolutely gorgeous! The prices were also fantastic. It looks stunning in my home, and I couldn’t be happier!

  12. Kenny S. (Verified Buyer)

Delivery service did not follow PrimeBonsai’s direction and placed the box / plant sideways but the packaging was great and protected the tree from any damage. Picture showed an unglazed clay pot but delivered a glazed blue pot. Blue works for me…other colors would not. Wish the branches were bent the long way of the pot rather than sticking out the short side of the pot. This looks to be a sturdy, good quality tree.

  13. Emmanuelle (Verified Buyer)

The Podocarpus was delivered in impeccable condition, thanks to the excellent packaging that ensured its safety during shipping.

  14. David D. (Verified Buyer)

I ordered this as a Hanukkah gift for my wife and it arrived swiftly, packed expertly, and in great condition. I also purchased the tray with pebbles, food, and Bonsai tips book. The product is exceptional and offered at an amazing price.

  15. Chris Olson (Verified Buyer)

The tree was shipped promptly and packaged very securely. It looks fantastic, and what’s even more impressive is that there’s live moss growing on the bark!
